KABUL (BNA): The Afghan Embassy in Islamabad has expressed dissatisfaction with the operations of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Peshawar, stating that they do not meet expectations.
In a recent press release, the embassy reported that Mawlavi Sardar Ahmad Shakib, the Charge d’Affaires of the Afghan Embassy in Islamabad, held a meeting with UNHCR representatives and related organizations in Peshawar. The embassy highlighted that the UNHCR’s daily activities in Peshawar are substandard, leaving approximately eight thousand Afghan migrants awaiting resolution of their issues.
The embassy further stated that Shakib visited all branches of the center to address the issues facing Afghan migrants on the verge of expulsion. It emphasized the difficult circumstances faced by Afghan migrants and warned of a potential humanitarian catastrophe.
The primary reason for the delay in addressing migrants’ issues was identified as the negligence of the UNHCR, which despite increasing its working days from 3 to 5, has only “4-5” employees, resulting in only 10 to 15 families being registered each day.
Shakib urged the regional representative of the UNHCR to expedite their efforts to complete the remaining work for migrants and prevent a humanitarian crisis. This includes the removal of biometric eye scans from the registration process.
