KANDAHAR(BNA): In a meeting between Roza Otunbayeva, head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), and Mullah Mohammad Sadiq Inquilabi, the deputy governor of Kandahar, the two sides discussed plans the UN can assist the province.
Otunbayeva stated that UNAMA is interested in assisting farmers in Kandahar shift away from poppy cultivation towards alternative crops. “We want to work with the local government to provide farmers in Kandahar with the resources and support they need to transition to legal, sustainable crops,” she said.
The deputy governor, Mullah Mohammad Sediq Qnqalabi, welcomed UNAMA’s plan and also called for the organization to cooperate on implementing infrastructure projects and providing treatment for drug addicts in the province.
