Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi met the US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman in Islamabad on Friday, state run media reported.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that Pakistan aims at a broad-based, long term and sustainable relationship with the United States for promoting economic cooperation and regional peace, reported Radio Pakistan.
He further said that the two states have had similar views about Afghanistan.
The Pakistan’s top diplomat stressed for regular talks between the two states on order to promote bilateral relations and to achieve other regional objectives. He hopes that the new Afghan interim government will work for establishing peace and stability in the country.
“The international community should positively engage with Afghanistan and provide humanitarian and financial resources to it … Concrete steps should be taken to build a sustainable economy in Afghanistan and address the difficulties of Afghan people,” Qureshi said.
The Foreign Minister also drew the attention to the blatant human rights violations being carried out in the Indian occupied part of Jammu and Kashmir, and urged for the resolution of Kashmir issue to ensure peace and stability in South Asia.
The US Deputy Secretary of State has lauded Pakistan for playing an important role in the evacuation of US and other nationals from Afghanistan.
She expressed sorrow for the loss of lives in the Baluchistan earthquake, which led to death of 20 people and injuries to around 200 people.
