On December 21, the ISPR&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1881211\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;that 25 civilians were handed prison terms by military courts over the May 9 events. A week later, another 60 civilians were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1880141\">handed<\/a>&nbsp;jail terms ranging from two to 10 years for their involvement in the nationwide riots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSequel to the promulgation of punishments to 9th May Tragedy convicts, they have exercised their right to appeal and have asked for mercy\/remission in their punishments,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA total of 67 convicts have given their mercy petitions,\u201d it said, adding that 48 petitions have been processed to Courts of Appeal, while petitions of 19 convicts have been accepted \u201cpurely on humanitarian grounds, under the law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It added that the mercy petitions of remaining convicts will be decided in due course of time, following the legal process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those whose punishment has been remitted include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Muhammad Ayaz s\/o Sahibzada Khan<\/li><li>Sami Ullah s\/o Meer dad Khan<\/li><li>Laeeq Ahmed s\/o Manzoor Ahmed<\/li><li>Amjad Ali s\/o Manzoor Ahmed<\/li><li>Yasir Nawaz s\/o Ameer Nawaz Khan<\/li><li>Said Alam s\/o Maaz Ullah Khan<\/li><li>Zahid Khan s\/o Muhammad Nabi<\/li><li>Muhammad Suleman s\/o Said Ghani Jan<\/li><li>Hamza Sharif s\/o Muhammad Azam<\/li><li>Muhammad Salman s\/o Zahid Nisar<\/li><li>Asher Butt s\/o Muhammad Arshad Butt<\/li><li>Muhammad Waqas s\/o Malik Muhammad Khalil<\/li><li>Sufayan Idrees s\/o Idrees Ahmed<\/li><li>Muneeb Ahmed s\/o Naveed Ahmed Butt<\/li><li>Muhammad Ahmed s\/o Muhammad Nazir<\/li><li>Muhammad Nawaz s\/o Abdul Samad<\/li><li>Muhammad Ali s\/o Muhammad Boota<\/li><li>Muhammad Bilawal s\/o Manzoor Hussain<\/li><li>Muhammad Ilyas s\/o Muhammad Fazal Haleem<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement said that those whose petitions have been accepted shall be \u201creleased after the completion of procedural formalities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll those convicted retain the right of appeal and other legal remedies as per the law and the constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ISPR added: \u201cThe remission of punishments is a testament to the strength of due process and fairness, which ensures that justice is served while also taking into account the principles of compassion and mercy.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The mercy petitions of 19 convicts involved in the&nbsp;May 9&nbsp;cases have been accepted based on humanitarian grounds, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced in a&nbsp;statement&nbsp;on Thursday.
