{"id":8838,"date":"2024-10-09T13:30:17","date_gmt":"2024-10-09T08:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/?p=8838"},"modified":"2024-10-09T13:30:19","modified_gmt":"2024-10-09T08:30:19","slug":"pakistan-calls-for-boosting-multilateral-development-banks-lending-to-combat-economic-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/asia\/pakistan-calls-for-boosting-multilateral-development-banks-lending-to-combat-economic-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan calls for boosting Multilateral Development Banks\u2019 lending to combat economic crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNITED NATIONS, Oct 09 (APP): Highlighting the \u201cpervasive\u201d development crisis \u2014 famine, poverty, and inequality\u2013 Pakistan on Tuesday<br>called for enhancing the quantity, quality, and accessibility of the Multilateral Development Bank\u2019s lending as part of a plan of action to deal with the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGeopolitical tensions and new protectionism are fragmenting trade networks and disrupting the world economy,\u201d Ambassador Munir Akram, permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, told the UN General Assembly\u2019s Second Committee (Economic and Financial), which began its general debate on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSixty countries are in debt distress; climate impacts are growing and the digital divide may become a new development divide,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, Ambassador Akram said, the international community\u2019s endeavor must be to muster the political will to achieve agreement on the plan of action for development which can be adopted at the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD-IV) which will take place in Spain in July next year, hoping for the plan to be implemented in \u201cgood faith.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pakistani envoy also proposed the revival of foreign direct investment, which fell by 26% in 2023, so as to help developing countries formulate viable and bankable projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On its part, he said, Pakistan will press for the establishment of a UN mechanism to facilitate public and private investment in sustainable infrastructure in developing countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, participants at the FfD-IV should reach agreement on a concrete time-bound roadmap for the fulfillment of the developed countries\u2019 0.7% of GNI ODA (Gross National Income, Official Development Assistance) commitment. \u201cWe should also define ODA \u2013 we cannot count climate finance, humanitarian aid, refugee costs, student costs, COVID-19 vaccines, etc. as ODA.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, at FfD-VI, an agreement on new sovereign debt architecture must be evolved, as 58 countries need to get out of the debt trap \u2013 which Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called a \u201cdeath trap\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDebt relief and restructuring should be fair, fast, and comprehensive,\u201d Ambassador Akram said, emphasizing the need to bring down borrowing costs for developing countries.
