UNITED NATIONS, Sep 30 (APP): Amid escalating Lebanon crisis, Iran has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in protest against the assassination of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli air strike in Beirut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a letter to the Security Council, Iranian Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani called on the 15-member body to \u201ctake immediate and decisive action to stop Israel\u2019s ongoing aggression and prevent\u2026 from dragging the region into full-scale war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cUsing US-supplied thousand-pound bunker busters,\u201d he wrote, Israel killed Nasrallah and Iranian Gen, Abbas Nilforushan, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He warned Israel not to attack any of its diplomatic or consular premises, or its representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIran will not hesitate to exercise its inherent rights under international law to take every measure in defence of its vital national and security interests,\u201d Iravani wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several world powers also warned of the assassination\u2019s potential repercussions, as the spectre of all-out war looms over the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
United Nations Chief Antonio Guterres said he was \u201cgravely concerned by the dramatic escalation of events in Beirut in the last 24 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Palestinian militant group Hamas called Nasrallah\u2019s killing \u201ca cowardly terrorist act.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe condemn in the strongest terms this barbaric Zionist aggression and targeting of residential buildings,\u201d Hamas said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas offered his \u201cdeep condolences\u201d to Lebanon for the deaths of Nasrallah and civilians, who \u201cfell as a result of the brutal Israeli aggression,\u201d according to a statement from his office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The foreign ministry of Iran said Nasrallah\u2019s work will continue after his death. \u201cHis sacred goal will be realized in the liberation of Quds, God willing,\u201d spokesman Nasser Kanani posted on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei announced five days of public mourning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on X that Lebanon was being subjected to a \u201cgenocide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a post on X, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel called the killing a \u201ccowardly targeted assassination\u201d that \u201cseriously threatens regional and global peace and security, for which Israel bears full responsibility with the complicity of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As expected, US leaders welcomed Nasrallah\u2019s demise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said in a post on X that he had spoken with the Lebanese premier. \u201cWe agreed on the need for an immediate ceasefire to bring an end to the bloodshed. A diplomatic solution is the only way to restore security and stability for the Lebanese and Israeli people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
