{"id":7904,"date":"2024-07-06T15:41:59","date_gmt":"2024-07-06T10:41:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/?p=7904"},"modified":"2024-07-06T15:42:05","modified_gmt":"2024-07-06T10:42:05","slug":"moderate-pezeshkian-wins-iran-presidential-election-urges-people-to-stick-with-him","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/asia\/moderate-pezeshkian-wins-iran-presidential-election-urges-people-to-stick-with-him\/","title":{"rendered":"Moderate Pezeshkian wins Iran presidential election, urges people to stick with him"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DUBAI, July 6 (Reuters) &#8211; Relative moderate Masoud Pezeshkian urged people on Saturday to stick with him on &#8220;the difficult road ahead&#8221; after beating a hardline rival to win Iran&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/iranians-vote-run-off-presidential-election-amid-widespread-apathy-2024-07-05\/\">presidential election<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Friday&#8217;s run-off vote was between Pezeshkian, the sole moderate in the original field of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/who-iran-seeks-presidency-after-raisis-death-2024-06-28\/\">four candidates<\/a>, and hardline former nuclear negotiator&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/iran-presidential-candidate-jalili-is-fiercely-loyal-khamenei-2024-06-29\/\">Saeed Jalili<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/iranians-vote-run-off-presidential-election-amid-widespread-apathy-2024-07-05\/\">Pezeshkian<\/a>, a 69-year-old cardiac surgeon, has pledged to promote a pragmatic foreign policy, ease tensions over now-stalled negotiations with major powers to revive a 2015 nuclear pact and improve prospects for social liberalisation and political pluralism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However many Iranians are sceptical about his ability to fulfil his campaign promises as Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, not the president, is the ultimate authority in the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Dear people of Iran, the election is over, and this is just the beginning of our working together. A difficult road is ahead. It can only be smooth with your cooperation, empathy and trust,&#8221; Pezeshkian said in a post on social media platform X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I extend my hand to you and swear on my honour that I will not abandon you on this path. Do not abandon me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turnout was almost 50% in Friday&#8217;s vote, following&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/irans-hardline-diplomat-sole-moderate-square-off-presidential-run-off-2024-06-29\/\">historically low turnout<\/a>&nbsp;in the first round ballot on June 28, when over 60% of Iranian voters abstained.
