Committee on Peacekeeping Operations, which held its first 2024 session on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pakistani envoy said that peacekeeping \u2014 U.N.\u2019s flagship activity \u2014 was a \u201csuccess story.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pakistan, he said, has over the years contributed more than 200,000 personnel to 47 peacekeeping missions in \u201coften challenging theatres\u201d of conflict around the world, in addition to hosting one of the first such operations \u2014 the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), which monitors the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in disputed Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambassador Akram called for accountability of the growing attacks against UN peacekeepers, noting the increasingly difficult challenges \u2013 from terrorists\u2019 criminal groups, and tribal rivalries, with unprecedented levels of threats to the peacekeepers\u2019 safety and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOften there is no peace to keep,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are also concerned by the increased misinformation and disinformation against UN Peacekeeping Missions and Peacekeepers resulting in threats to their safety and security,\u201d the Pakistani envoy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this regard, Ambassador Akram suggested an updated strategy that would ensure provision to each Mission with adequate financial, human, material resources and advanced capabilities \u2013 UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicle), radar, early warning, intelligence and counter-IED (improvised explosive devices) \u2013 to implement its mandate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe distinction between peacekeeping and peace enforcement must always remain clear and distinct\u201d he emphasized, adding that an enforcement mission would require strong and clear mandates, adequately trained, experienced and equipped troops, allocation of the substantial resources which such missions require, and above all, the cooperation of the host government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, the Pakistani envoy said the role of regional organizations could play a critical role in peace enforcement efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pakistan, Ambassador Akram said, would work with the UN and all interested States to further develop the concept of peace enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSuch robust UN Missions could be \u2018nimble and adaptable\u2019 as the UN Secretary-General has envisaged, but their mandates would need supplementary responsibilities such as pre-emptive conflict prevention, rather than reactive responses; cross-border interdiction; control over illegal exploitation of national resources; promoting intra-State and inter-State cooperation,\u201d he added.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UITED NATIONS, Feb 21 (APP): Pakistan has called for strengthening the role and capacity of UN peacekeeping in hotspots around the world, saying the missions must be part of the effort to address and resolve the underlying causes of conflict that the Blue Helmets monitor. \u201cA peacekeeping mission must be part of an overall \u2018political [&hellip;]<\/p>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":7697,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[84,82],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7696","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-india","category-paksitan"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7696"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7696"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7696\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/7697"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7696"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7696"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7696"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
