Krishnan, the top bureaucrat in the electronics and infotech ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision spells relief for global laptop makers such as Dell\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/DELL.N\" target=\"_blank\">(DELL.N)<\/a>, HP\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/HPE.N\" target=\"_blank\">(HPE.N)<\/a>, Apple\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/AAPL.O\" target=\"_blank\">(AAPL.O)<\/a>, Samsung\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/005930.KS\" target=\"_blank\">(005930.KS)<\/a>\u00a0and Lenovo\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/0992.HK\" target=\"_blank\">(0992.HK)<\/a>, which had been unnerved by the abrupt announcement of a licensing regime in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Aug. 3, India imposed a licensing regime on laptops and tablet imports, but quickly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/india-will-not-impose-restrictions-laptop-imports-official-2023-10-13\/\">deferred<\/a>&nbsp;the decision following criticism from industry and Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That plan would have allowed the government to reject import requests while requiring a licence for every shipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further measures could be taken after September 2024 on the basis of the data collected, Krishnan added, speaking at a press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEW DELHI, Oct 19 (Reuters) &#8211; India is launching a new system of &#8220;authorisation&#8221; for imports of laptops, tablets and personal computers, aiming to monitor shipments of such hardware without hurting market supply, government officials said on Thursday.
