{"id":5193,"date":"2023-05-08T16:14:45","date_gmt":"2023-05-08T11:14:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/?p=5193"},"modified":"2023-05-08T16:14:47","modified_gmt":"2023-05-08T11:14:47","slug":"china-and-u-s-see-need-to-stabilise-relations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/world\/china-and-u-s-see-need-to-stabilise-relations\/","title":{"rendered":"China and U.S. see need to stabilise relations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BEIJING, May 8 (Reuters) &#8211; China&#8217;s Foreign Minister Qin Gang said on Monday it is imperative to stabilise Sino-U.S. relations after a series of &#8220;erroneous words and deeds&#8221; threw ties back into a deep freeze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Qin, in a meeting in Beijing with U.S. ambassador Nicholas Burns, stressed in particular that the United States must correct its handling of the Taiwan issue and stop the hollowing out of the &#8220;one China&#8221; principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The relationship between the world&#8217;s two biggest economies sank to a low last year when then speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi paid an official visit to democratically governed Taiwan, angering China, which claims the island as its territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response, Beijing severed formal communications channels with the United States including one between their militaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The top priority is to stabilise Sino-U.S. relations, avoid a downward spiral and prevent any accidents between China and the United States,&#8221; Qin told Burns, the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tension between the two superpowers had eased last November when U.S. and Chinese leaders Joe Biden and Xi Jinping met at a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/ahead-tense-g20-summit-biden-xi-meet-talks-2022-11-14\/\">G20 summit<\/a>\u00a0in Indonesia and pledged more frequent dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But tensions flared again in February when a Chinese high-altitude balloon appeared in U.S. airspace and in response U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken cancelled a visit to Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A series of erroneous words and deeds by the United States since then have undermined the hard-won positive momentum of Sino-U.S. relations,&#8221; Qin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The agenda of dialogue and cooperation agreed by the two sides has been disrupted, and the relationship between the two countries has once again encountered cold ice.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;CHALLENGES&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Burns, in a post on Twitter about his talks with Qin, also spoke of the need to bring stability to the relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I met State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang today.  We discussed challenges in the U.S.-China relationship and the necessity of stabilizing ties and expanding high-level communication. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2AYxkXiVMI\">pic.twitter.com\/2AYxkXiVMI<\/a><\/p>&mdash; U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue (@USAmbChina) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USAmbChina\/status\/1655490409303355392?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 8, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We discussed challenges in the U.S.-China relationship and the necessity of stabilising ties and expanding high-level communication,&#8221; Burns said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, Blinken appeared to offer hope of a visit, telling the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/blinken-says-he-hopes-reschedule-trip-china-this-year-2023-05-03\/\">Washington Post<\/a>\u00a0that it was important to re-establish regular lines of communication at all levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also last week, U.S. climate envoy&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-climate-envoy-kerry-says-china-has-invited-him-talks-2023-05-03\/\">John Kerry<\/a>&nbsp;said China had invited him to visit &#8220;in the near term&#8221; for talks on averting a global climate crisis, further raising hope of resetting one of the world&#8217;s most important state-to-state relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taiwan remains the thorniest issue in Sino-U.S. ties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, China staged&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/japan-following-chinas-taiwan-drills-with-great-interest-2023-04-10\/\">war games around Taiwan<\/a>&nbsp;after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1979, the U.S.-Taiwan relationship has been governed by the Taiwan Relations Act, which gives a legal basis to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself, but does not mandate that the United States come to Taiwan&#8217;s aid if attacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a part of the 2023 budget, U.S. Congress has authorised up to $1 billion worth of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-moving-ahead-with-500-million-arms-aid-taiwan-source-says-2023-05-05\/\">weapons<\/a>&nbsp;aid for Taiwan using a type of authority that expedites security assistance and has helped to deliver arms to Ukraine.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BEIJING, May 8 (Reuters) &#8211; China&#8217;s Foreign Minister Qin Gang said on Monday it is imperative to stabilise Sino-U.S. relations after a series of &#8220;erroneous words and deeds&#8221; threw ties back into a deep freeze.
