{"id":2483,"date":"2021-11-24T18:01:09","date_gmt":"2021-11-24T13:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/?p=2483"},"modified":"2021-11-24T18:01:12","modified_gmt":"2021-11-24T13:01:12","slug":"china-slams-us-for-inviting-taiwan-to-bidens-summit-on-democracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/world\/china-slams-us-for-inviting-taiwan-to-bidens-summit-on-democracy\/","title":{"rendered":"China slams US for inviting Taiwan to Biden&#8217;s summit on democracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Washington invites 110 \u2018participants&#8217;, including Taiwan, to attend virtual summit on democracy next month<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>ISTANBUL, Nov 24, ( AA)-\u00a0China on Wednesday came down heavily on the US invitation to self-ruled Taiwan to President Joe Biden\u2019s virtual summit on democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose who provide a platform for Taiwan secessionists will only bring themselves down,\u201d Zhao Lijian, spokesman of China\u2019s Foreign Ministry, told a news conference in Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taiwan, which Beijing calls its \u201cbreakaway province,\u201d is among 110 \u201cparticipants\u201d invited to attend the summit set for next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington appears to have avoided using \u201ccountries\u201d while identifying the participants of the summit. The move is considered as a rebuke to China&#8217;s insistence on a &#8220;One-China policy&#8221; when it comes to the issue of Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taipei has been insisting on its independence since 1949 and has established full diplomatic relations with at least 15 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who play with fire by supporting Taiwan secessionist forces will only burn themselves, said Zhao, according to state-run media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taipei has confirmed the invitation and called it an \u201caffirmation of Taiwan&#8217;s efforts to promote the values of democracy and human rights over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The island nation will be represented by Digital Minister Audrey Tang and Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan&#8217;s representative in Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Looking forward to Minister @audreyt (Audrey Tang) and our Representative in the US @bikhim (Hsiao Bi-khim) attending the Summit for Democracy this December. Thank you to the US government for hosting this global conference to bring countries together in defence of our shared values,&#8221; Tsai Ing-wen, president of the self-ruled island, tweeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The invitation has been extended at a time when exchanges between Taiwan and US and its allies have increased, triggering tensions across the Taiwan Strait which has also witnessed unprecedented air and naval activities in the recent past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US formally recognized China in 1979 and shifted diplomatic relations from Taipei to Beijing, including Taiwan as part of mainland China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Taiwan Relations Act, a 1979 law, has guided US relations with Taiwan.
