{"id":2086,"date":"2021-11-03T11:00:26","date_gmt":"2021-11-03T06:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/?p=2086"},"modified":"2021-11-03T11:00:29","modified_gmt":"2021-11-03T06:00:29","slug":"pakistan-reopens-wesh-chaman-border-crossing-for-afghanistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/business\/pakistan-reopens-wesh-chaman-border-crossing-for-afghanistan\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan reopens Wesh-Chaman border crossing for Afghanistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Quetta, Nov 3, (Asia Free Press): Pakistan has reopened Chaman border, one of the main crossings to Afghanistan after being closed for almost a month, on Tuesday, according to state run media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pakistani officials hope for an end to a standoff that has caused heavy losses to traders and left thousands stranded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wesh-Chaman crossing is a major transit point for truckers moving fruit exports from around the southern Afghan city of Kandahar and its closure for the past 27 days has come at a high cost for farmers unable to get their produce to market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Afghan transit trade and other trade and economic activities continue,&#8221; a senior Pakistan border official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reopening should come as a relief to the Taliban government in Kabul, which desperately needs the customs revenues from the border posts. Its cash-strapped economy has few other legitimate sources of foreign revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Afghanistan has sunk deeper into economic crisis, with the abrupt withdrawal of foreign aid following the Taliban victory in August, Pakistani officials have been increasingly concerned by the prospect of a new wave of refugees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pakistani authorities originally closed the borders due to security threats, but disputes over issues ranging from COVID-19 to the validity of Afghan travel documents prevented reopening for weeks, despite pledges of action.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Quetta, Nov 3, (Asia Free Press): Pakistan has reopened Chaman border, one of the main crossings to Afghanistan after being closed for almost a month, on Tuesday, according to state run media.
