{"id":10323,"date":"2025-08-07T13:56:27","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T08:56:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/?p=10323"},"modified":"2025-08-07T13:56:37","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T08:56:37","slug":"india-exporters-say-50pc-trump-levy-severe-setback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en_gb\/asia\/india-exporters-say-50pc-trump-levy-severe-setback\/","title":{"rendered":"India exporters say 50pc Trump levy \u2018severe setback\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Indian exporters warned that additional US tariffs risked making businesses \u201cnot viable\u201d after President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1929231\">ordered<\/a> steeper levies on Indian goods over New Delhi\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1928905\/trump-says-he-will-very-substantially-raise-tariffs-on-india-in-next-24-hours-over-russian-oil-purchases\">purchasing<\/a> of Russian oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stocks opened marginally lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Nifty index down 0.31 per cent after an initial 25pc US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1927587\">tariff<\/a> came into effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that will be doubled in three weeks, after Trump signed an order Wednesday to impose an additional 25pc levy for New Delhi\u2019s continued purchase of Russian oil, a key revenue source for Moscow\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1676939\">war<\/a> in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India is the second-largest buyer of Russian oil, saving itself billions of dollars on discounted crude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India\u2019s foreign ministry condemned Trump\u2019s announcement of further tariffs, calling the move \u201cunfair, unjustified and unreasonable\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>S.C. Ralhan, president of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), said he feared a troubling impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis move is a severe setback for Indian exports, with nearly 55pc of our shipments to the US market directly affected\u201d, he said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe 50pc reciprocal tariff effectively imposes a cost burden, placing our exporters at a 30\u201335pc competitive disadvantage compared to peers from countries with lesser reciprocal tariff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ralhan said \u201cmany export orders have already been put on hold\u201d as buyers reassess sourcing decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For \u201ca large number\u201d of small to medium-sized enterprises, profit \u201cmargins are already thin\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAbsorbing this sudden cost escalation is simply not viable\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The world\u2019s fifth-largest economy \u2014 and most populous nation \u2014 is bracing for a bumpy ride, as the United States is its largest trading partner, with New Delhi shipping goods worth $87.4 billion in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf the extra 25pc tariff that President Trump has announced on imports from India remains in place, India\u2019s attractiveness as an emerging manufacturing hub will be hugely undermined\u201d, Shilan Shah of Capital Economics said in a note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>US spending drives around 2.5pc of India\u2019s GDP, Shah said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But a 50pc tariff is \u201clarge enough to have a material impact\u201d, he added, with the resulting drop in exports meaning the economy would grow by closer to 6pc this year and next, down from the 7pc they currently forecast.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Indian exporters warned that additional US tariffs risked making businesses \u201cnot viable\u201d after President Donald Trump ordered steeper levies on Indian goods over New Delhi\u2019s purchasing of Russian oil.
