ISLAMABAD: A senior US official on Wednesday underscored Washington\u2019s strategic interest in Pakistan\u2019s mineral sector<\/a>, signalling a push for long-term cooperation in the development of critical mineral resources key to American advanced technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCritical minerals are the raw materials necessary for our most advanced technologies,\u201d Eric Meyer, senior bureau official for the Department of State\u2019s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, was quoted in a statement issued by the US embassy in Islamabad on his visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Meyer led the US delegation<\/a> to the Pakistan Minerals Invest\u00adment Forum<\/a>, after which he enga\u00adged with civil and military leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff Gen Asim Munir, Interior Mi\u00ad\u00adnister Mohsin Naqvi, and Petro\u00adleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPresident Trump has made it clear that securing diverse and reliable sources of these materials is a strategic priority,\u201d Meyer said. \u201cPakistan\u2019s vast mineral potential \u2014if responsibly and transparently developed \u2014 can benefit both our countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the statement issued by the US embassy, the United States \u201ccontinues to work with international partners and Pakistani stakeholders to explore opportunities for investment, technical collaboration, and responsible resource management in the minerals sector.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahead of Meyer\u2019s arrival, Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone call with Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, reiterating US interest in Pakistan\u2019s mineral resources and the potential for expanded cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his meeting with Gen Munir, Mr Meyer emphasised that \u201ccollaboration in mineral development with Pakistan is a core area of mutual interest,\u201d according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PM Shehbaz welcomed the US participation at the Forum, calling the minerals sector a priority area for investment. \u201cThe minerals sector of Pakistan presents immense opportunities,\u201d the premier told the delegation, \u201cand we encourage US companies to invest in this priority sector.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economic, security cooperation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In meetings that Mr Meyer had in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, both sides discussed avenues for enhancing bilateral trade and investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US and Pakistani officials expressed mutual confidence in Pakistan\u2019s \u201cinvestment landscape\u201d and committed to boosting partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBoth sides expressed confidence on the positive trajectory of bilateral relations and agreed on the need to explore B2B avenues,\u201d the ISPR stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Counterterrorism cooperation featured prominently in Mr Meyer\u2019s discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz, Gen Munir and Minister Naqvi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe PM underscored the importance of enhanced cooperation\u2026 including trade and investment, as well as counterterrorism,\u201d said PM Office in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
