{"id":8967,"date":"2024-10-23T15:15:22","date_gmt":"2024-10-23T10:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/?p=8967"},"modified":"2024-10-23T15:15:25","modified_gmt":"2024-10-23T10:15:25","slug":"will-india-support-pakistans-bid-to-join-brics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.asiafreepress.com\/en\/asia\/will-india-support-pakistans-bid-to-join-brics\/","title":{"rendered":"Will India support Pakistan\u2019s bid to join BRICS?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW DELHI: While Pakistan made a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1815650\">formal request<\/a>&nbsp;to join BRICS last year, India, prodded by Russia, may yield to the move at the group\u2019s summit that kicked off in Russia\u2019s third largest city, Kazan, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1802825\">new members<\/a>&nbsp;are admitted by consensus, India\u2019s opposition had worried the other founding members of BRICS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November 2023, the Foreign Office spokesperson had told a presser that Pakistan sought to join the leading Global South bloc, mentioning that the country had warm ties with \u201cmost\u201d BRICS members. Since then, the likelihood of India\u2019s acceptance of Pakistan\u2019s membership has been speculated in the media on both sides of the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chances only brig\u00adh\u00adtened after Russia\u2019s Dep\u00aduty Prime Minister Alexei gave public support to Pakistan\u2019s membership of BRICS during his visit to Islamabad in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/news\/india\/india-ready-to-provide-all-possible-cooperation-to-end-russia-ukraine-conflict-pm-modi-to-putin\/\">report<\/a>&nbsp;in India\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Tri\u00adbune<\/em>&nbsp;newspaper on Tues\u00adday gave further credence to the possibility, as India\u2019s Narendra Modi reached Kazan, ahead of the opening of the summit and held bilateral talks with Presi\u00addent Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The alliance that initi\u00adally included Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa has expan\u00added rapidly to embrace Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Pakistan\u2019s application for the membership in August last year, Turkiye, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have also formally applied to become members, and a few others have expressed interest in joining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now significant progress in the latest border talks between India and China may become the sweetener in the bargain, given the special relations Islamabad has with Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe believe that by joining BRICS, Pakistan can play an important role in furthering international cooperation and revitalising inclusive multilateralism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also hope that BRICS will move forward on Pakistan\u2019s request in line with its commitment to inclusive multilateralism,\u201c Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, the Foreign Office spokesperson in Islamabad, had said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, Russia\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1859919\">held formal talks<\/a>&nbsp;with Pakistan\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and said Moscow would favour Pakistan\u2019s inclusion in BRICS.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEW DELHI: While Pakistan made a&nbsp;formal request&nbsp;to join BRICS last year, India, prodded by Russia, may yield to the move at the group\u2019s summit that kicked off in Russia\u2019s third largest city, Kazan, on Tuesday.
