Srinagar, March 19 (AsiaFreePress):\u00a0<\/strong>As Karnataka High Court dismisses all pro-hijab petitions, stating, that \u2018hijab does not form a part of essential religious practice in the Islamic faith\u2019, the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has said that the decision to uphold the ban on wearing hijab in state\u2019s educational institutions was a violation of religious freedom.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe ruling is a grave injustice and indignity to women and girls seeking an education in accordance with their faith,\u201d said Anurima Bhargava, the panel\u2019s commissioner.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom is an independent, bipartisan American government agency that monitors the universal right to freedom of religion and makes policy recommendations.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 15, the Karnataka High Court had adjudicated that the hijab is not essential to Islam and had dismissed all petitions filed against the state government\u2019s ban on wearing hijabs in educational institutions.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ban had been imposed last month after Muslim students of the Government Women\u2019s Pre-University College in Karnataka\u2019s Udupi city protested because they were not allowed to attend classes for being dressed in the headscarf.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision by the high court was challenged in the Supreme Court, which said it would take up the matter after March 20.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has been critical of the violation of religious freedom in India.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its annual report for 2021, the commission had recommended that United States President Joe Biden designate India as a \u201ccountry of particular concern\u201d for engaging in and tolerating \u201csystematic, ongoing, and egregious\u201d religious freedom violations.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn 2020, religious freedom conditions in India continued their negative trajectory,\u201d the commission had said. \u201cThe government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), promoted Hindu nationalist policies resulting in systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the second such recommendation from the panel. It had noted a \u201csharp downward turn\u201d in religious freedom in India in 2019 and flagged it as a \u201ccountry of particular concern\u201d in its 2020 report, for the first time since 2004.  <\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
