Lebanon reports 6 new Israeli breaches of ceasefire deal

Lebanese media reported six new Israeli violations of a ceasefire agreement on Monday, a day after 24 people were killed by Israeli army fire in southern Lebanon.

An Israeli reconnaissance drone dropped a grenade in the town of Bani Haiyyan, injuring one person, the state news agency NNA reported.

Another drone dropped a bomb as a municipal team was working to pave a road in the same town, causing injuries, NNA said.

According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, two people were wounded in the two Israeli attacks.

Israeli forces also seized a Lebanese citizen in the town of Wazzani and opened fire toward local residents, NNA said.

The Israeli army also fired at Lebanese soldiers stationed west of Meiss El-Jabal in southern Lebanon, the same source said.

Israeli drones also flew at medium altitude over Tyre in southern Lebanon while soldiers opened fire at residents in Zahajra town. No injuries were reported.

The new breaches came one day after 24 people were killed and 134 others when Israeli forces opened fire on displaced civilians trying to return to their homes in southern Lebanon.

Tension escalated as the Israeli army remained in the Lebanese territory after a 60-day deadline for its withdrawal from southern Lebanon passed on Sunday under the ceasefire agreement.

The White House said on Sunday that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to an extension of the deadline for the Israeli withdrawal until Feb. 18.

A fragile cease-fire has been in place since Nov. 27, ending a period of mutual shelling between Israel and the Hezbollah group that began on Oct. 8, 2023, and escalated into a full-scale conflict on Sept. 23 last year.

Lebanese authorities have reported at least 660 Israeli breaches of the ceasefire deal ever since.

Under the ceasefire terms, Israel was required to withdraw its forces south of the Blue Line – a de facto border – in phases, while the Lebanese army was to deploy in southern Lebanon within 60 days.

Data from the Lebanese Health Ministry indicates that since Israel’s onslaught against Lebanon began on Oct. 8, 2023, at least 4,080 people have been killed, including women, children, and health workers, while 16,753 have been injured.
