Islamabad, Oct. 22, (Asia Free Press): At least six people were killed in an attack at a Rohingya camp in Bangladesh’s Cox Bazar on Friday, it is the latest incident of violence in the world’s largest refugee settlement, according to Reuters.
An armed gang attacked a religious seminary before dawn in Cox Bazar’s Ukhiya area. The attack led to killings of three teachers, two volunteers and a student, the local police said.
“A drive is underway to arrest those responsible for the incident,” police superintendent Shihab Kaiser Khan has told Reuters, adding one Rohingya man with weapons and ammunition had been taken into custody.
Around 1 million Rohingya live in the refugee camps in southern Bangladesh, most of them arrived after fleeing Myanmar during a military crackdown in 2007.
There has been an increase in violence inside the settlements, where armed gangs are vying for power.
Last month, gunmen shot and killed a prominent Rohingya Muslim leader in the camps.
