BEIJING: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East and urged greater cooperation among developing countries during a press conference on China’s foreign policy held on the sidelines of the fourth session of the 14th National People’s Congress.
Speaking about tensions involving Iran and the broader situation in the Middle East, Wang said China maintains an objective and impartial position and believes the priority should be ending hostilities.
He warned that the region is “engulfed in flames” and called for an immediate halt to military operations to prevent further escalation and the spread of conflict. Wang said the use of force cannot resolve the region’s problems and would only deepen hostility and create new crises.
“This is a war that should not have happened,” he said, adding that armed conflict does no one any good and only fuels further instability.
Wang also highlighted the growing role of the Global South in international affairs, describing it as an emerging positive force on the global stage. He said China considers itself part of the Global South and is ready to work with other developing countries to advance modernization and strengthen cooperation.
Reaffirming Beijing’s support for multilateralism, Wang said China remains committed to the role of the United Nations in global governance and called for stronger international cooperation to address global challenges.
He added that China will continue working with countries around the world to promote what it describes as a community with a shared future for humanity.
